From Our Regional Director Andre Willemse         in association with Claudia Lowry

"Learn More to Earn More". That's a phrase that you'll be hearing a lot from our Regional Team.

Ask any successful person, and they will confirm that they have a library of books, sometimes an actual room stacked with bookshelves filled with books or instead an Audible library of audio books that has been collected and saved over the years.

Reading and applying what we read is a critical part of success. I encourage you to share the books that you're reading with your fellow members.

Here are some of my favourite books including ones that have been highly recommended, available on Audible.com or hard copy:

Simon Sinek - Start With Why
Simon Sinek - Leaders Eat Last
Oren Klaff - Pitch Anything
Mike Macedonio, Ivan Misner - The World's Beset Known Marketing Secret
Harvey MacKay - Swim with the Sharks without Being Eaten Alive
Mark Buckingham - Discover your Strengths
Robert Kiyosaki - Rich Dad, Poor Dad
Beverley E Jones - Think Like An Entrepreneur, Act Like A CEO

BNI Monthly Networking Tip

We’ve all experienced the violation of BNI’s “One Person Per Profession” policy. It happens honestly and without negative intention, but it can and does create clashes within our chapters. Many of us have more than one source of income, but our Membership Committees accepted us for one clearly defined classification. Some of us have a tendency to skirt that policy because our chapter doesn’t have a member in “that profession”, because we want to be nice, and/or because our Membership Committee doesn’t hold us accountable. For example: imagine an applicant applying for a profession which one of our current members has been talking about on the side. Because we allowed our fellow member to talk about his/her other profession, this applicant now represents a financial imposition on that member’s potential to make more money. However, if our chapter had enforced Policy #1, this would never have been a problem. Another consequence is that we never invite certain professions because we know that one of our members does that on the side!

This decision means tens, if not hundreds of thousands of [rands] in potential referrals are lost because we didn’t invite that expert to our chapter! Talking about your second source of income can be very damaging to your fellow members. The true intention of this policy is to create a level playing field for all.

This means that, when the policy is followed correctly, we only talk about the professional classification we were accepted for, and we hold to that in all areas of BNI including Weekly Meetings, Feature Presentations, 1-2-1s, Trainings, Mixers and Banquets.

When Is a Referral Not Really a Referral?

BNI members know that word of mouth marketing is the most valuable tool in any business person’s marketing arsenal. A personal referral from a trusted contact can influence a potential client to buy your products or services over any other method of marketing. What makes a referral different from a lead is that, more than just the random passing along of a supplier’s information, a referral is passed on at the time at which your particular product or services are in need, and the quality of what you offer is personally vouched for in the process. While referral does not necessarily lead to a guaranteed sale, it opens the door for you to do business with someone who is in the market to buy your product....
